Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
