Merv Review – A Four-Legged Actor Dominates the Show in Amazon’s By-the-Book Christmas Romcom

It is a common warning for numerous people that jointly caring for a canine companion post-separation is a terrible idea. The consensus suggests such setups hinder individuals from finding closure, create logistical nightmares, lead to tension, and are a nuisance across the board. Seemingly, and in a twist suited to a direct-to-platform film, it can even cause the canine in question to experience sadness.

Without minimizing the emotional well-being of dogs – pet parents observe their deep emotional capacity. To witness a masterclass in canine melancholy, simply recall a past film. There is little doubt that a dog of Merv's nature, a spirited little dog portrayed by the canine actor Gus, would struggle adapting to divided living arrangements. If this concept a full holiday film on this conflict holds water remains a questionable prospect.

A Familiar Formula

To its credit, Merv, written by Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart and under the guidance of playwright Jessica Swale, doesn't pretend to be deeper than what it is. This is a Christmas movie from a streaming platform giant – the ambitions remains surface-level. The narrative proves to be simple and direct: exes Russ (Charlie Cox) and Anna, portrayed by Zooey Deschanel, forced to acknowledge that their individual funk is rivaled only by their dog's, embark on a therapeutic trip to a dog-friendly resort. Once there, as expected, they will surely realize the idea that they belong with each other. Side characters – including Chris Redd, Jasmine Mathews, and others – are crafted as the usual assortment of types. Visually is reminiscent of a branded content, with a Christmas setting that is visibly contrived – as seen in fake snow surrounding green trees as North Carolina doubles as a cold December city.

Where the Film Shines

Whether these predictable parts merge into an entertaining watch hinges on the execution and the viewer's appetite for easy entertainment. For the comfort factor, Merv knows its audience – individuals who seek out for cute animal clips. Audiences receive a wealth of adorable dog montages. The main attraction is Merv himself, and even if it causes some awkward editing between animal action and the actors' responses, the movie delivers on canine party antics, dog depression, and, ultimately, a tail-wagging resolution.

Where It Wobbles

The same praise is not earned for the human side of the story. The film's approach shifts uneasily between emotional depth, wacky comedy, formulaic romance, and physical comedy, failing to master a single genre. No blame falls on Cox's performance, who is willing to embrace the humiliating and funny demanded of the bizarre setting. Cox exhibits a likable self-deprecation that supplies the bulk of the chemistry for this on-the-rocks couple. Anna's portrayer, as is her trademark, imparts a certain millennial quirkiness that will either resonate with viewers. Her portrayal can feel a touch too detached, notably when contrasted against Cox's vulnerable performance. (It should be noted, Merv himself succeeds in looking despondent – he may not be Messi from that acclaimed drama, he remains a scene-stealer.)

Merv tries to provide depth to the couple's history for scenes without their pet – which is unfortunate, given that the dog is easily the cutest element of this cute-aiming movie. Expectedly, it achieves only baseline competence. The reason for their original breakup would feel more adult and realistic with less exposition and more subtle storytelling. As it stands, Merv is slight and sweet, fulfilling every expected note. Creating a movie with this canine conflict isn't a bad idea – even if it's not exactly a stroke of genius.

  • Merv becomes available on the Amazon platform on December 10th.
